Landscape Design Spotlight: Tending to Trees in the Winter! The weather has cooled, leaves have fallen, and trees are bare, you know what that means? It is a great time to check tree health. I help sellers prepare their homes for sale and advise buyers on which homes will weather the weather! For buyers, it can be a great time of year to search and one of the less considered factors is the health of trees. Tree removal can be costly but a fallen tree can create irreparable damage. Similarly, if you are a homeowner and you are winterizing, outsmarting Jack Frost should be a key part of your preparation for the coldest months. Winterizing trees prepares them for spring. So where you have new trees, give them a thorough watering, fertilize them, and give them a two-inch cover of mulch. You can also spray anti-desiccant on new trees to keep them more protected. You will also want to do dormant pruning and remove dead trees. Arborists and landscapers can advise you which trees are unhealthy and are risks to your home and also can prune the trees to ensure that the regrowth is even and that dead branches will not become a problem later. Winter pruning also helps prevent disease in trees. Next is insect control. You can apply a dormant oil, which gets rid of pests but is not toxic to beneficial insects. Another topical treatment is gypsum which reduces the damage caused by salt runoff. The four key points to maintaining trees during winter is to inspect, repair, prune, and protect. If you do this work now, your trees will come back better than ever in the spring. If you are considering selling on The Main Line, I have many more Main Line maintenance tips and seller updates in my Seller Seminar, linked below.
