Are you considering downsizing to a 55+ community but are not sure if it is a good fit? Hi, I’m Kimmy Rolph and I represent downsizing families, couples, and individuals on The Main Line PA and while we have great communities for retirement and aging in place, they are not for everyone. I am going to go over some of the most common issues that people have when they move into a 55+ community. First, 55+ communities can be expensive. Because these communities offer a lot more than just a universally designed home, including food, activities and often transportation, they are more expensive. These fees range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per month. On the one hand there are lots of advantages to all the help, and many people really appreciate this. Second, there are a good amount of rules. Some people moving into 55+ communities do not like all the rules. With amenities and increased HOA come rules. If you are interested in a community and what rules they have like who can stay with you and HOA stipulations, please contact me, I am very familiar with Main Line Area 55+. Next, you will be living amongst peers and there is are non stop activities. Some people move to these communities and find themselves overwhelmed and do not like to be around so many people! It’s true. You might be the type of person that really prefer living with younger people or your children and a 55+ would not be a good choice. Another issue is resale. 55+ community homes can be more difficult to sell, because of the rules. This is not a huge issue since there is so little inventory on The Main Line, but should be weighed against buying or upgrading a home with features of universal design. This can really be a great option, or it could be something that you do not like at all! The best way to know is to visit these communities. If you or a loved one is considering moving into a smaller home or an aging in place facility, please contact me and see my resources below. Let’s take this next step together.
